You might already know for sure that you have an bed bug problem. Here are a couple of the most common signs of an infestation.
Bed bug bites are small, red, and itchy and look similar to bites from fleas and mosquitoes. They are typically seen on arms, hands, and legs in small clusters or zigzag lines of 3-4 bites. It may take up to two weeks to see the bites, and they can occasionally lead to hives or blistering.
Small, dark spots resembling ink dots indicate bed bug droppings containing digested human blood. These spots are seen around bed bug hiding spots like mattress seams and folds, zippers, and all sides of the furniture.
Bed bugs feed on blood and become engorged. Moving while you sleep may crush a bed bug that has just finished feeding, creating red or rust-colored stains. These are not as common to see as fecal spots.
Translucent, tan-colored bed bug exoskeletons, or molt, are found near hiding places. Bed Bugs shed or molt several times before reaching adulthood. If multiple exoskeletons are found, it’s an indication of a bed bug infestation.
Musty odor in the bedroom, untraceable to a source, might indicate a bed bug infestation. The smell comes from a mix of dead bugs, live bug pheromones, and feces. It intensifies as the infestation worsens, often resembling rust and moldy laundry.
