They feed on the blood of warm-blooded animals and humans. Some can even transmit diseases when they bite. They are the most common carriers of the rare bubonic plague.
That’s because they can hitch a ride in on clothing, furniture, or carpets, or they could have come from previous owners. Stray animals, rodents, or wildlife on your property can also bring them into your home. That’s why we recommend our Yard Enjoyment and Home Protection Plans – you never know how fleas will find their way into your home.
They can leap up to 350 times their body length, covering several inches in a single jump. Their powerful hind legs enable them to jump quickly from one host or surface to another. This ability facilitates their hitchhiking into homes.
The time pets spend outside interacting with the environment and other animals makes them much more susceptible. It’s estimated that once you see a single flea on your cat or dog, there may be as many as 100 immature fleas infesting your home.
They can survive very well in heated homes during winter. It is more challenging to eliminate fleas in winter because their life cycle is longer than in summer. Adult fleas can live up to a year in favorable conditions and endure weeks without food.
Up to 40 a day and around 1,085 in its lifetime! These eggs aren’t sticky and fall into carpets, floor cracks, pet bedding, and grass. The eggs hatch after 2 to 12 days, and once hatched, fleas go through different stages before becoming adults. The larval stage lasts 24 days in warm weather, but it can be as long as 200 days in cold weather. During this time, fleas hide in dark and warm places, like pet bedding.
They are eager eaters and will not hesitate to bite people or animals. They are also hungry for a reason – they need to eat to be able to lay eggs.
They can also hitch a ride on any kind of pet, like your house cat, indoor rabbit, or guinea pig. Because they also bother wildlife, flea eggs and larvae can be found almost anywhere.

Several insects can be mistaken for fleas due to their small size and similar appearance. Some common examples include bed bugs, booklice, and clover mites.

In severe infestations, fleas may jump on surfaces, especially in areas where pets frequent.
If your pets are scratching excessively or displaying signs of discomfort, it may indicate fleas. Pets may develop hot spots or irritated areas on their skin due to constant scratching and biting at flea bites. Check their fur for fleas, flea dirt, or other signs.
Fleas can also bite humans, leaving itchy red bumps. If you notice unexplained bites, it could be a sign of fleas in the home.
Flea dirt, which looks like small dark specks, may be present in your pet’s bedding, carpets, or furniture where your pets spend time.
